Are you looking for
something valuable to do with your time and energy?
In the Star of the Sea FPC,
we're looking for creative people
willing and and able to share their gifts and abilities,
in helping Middle School and High School students identify and develop their own.
As a "Starcharter," or adult mentor in the FPC, how much would you have to do?
As a volunteer, that's up to you.
What exactly would you be involved with?
Also your call.
Students have different interests and talents, as do adults.
Please peruse the interest areas mentioned below, and see if any of them works for you.
We're also open to suggestions of your own.
Then, if you think you'd like to give it a try,
use the Contact Us page to let us know, mentioning your main area of interest along with a few other things about yourself in the "Add a message" section.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Academic Composition
For one of the books, Inkspillers compose a book review, shoring up their academic composition skills. Is this an area you might help out with?
Calligraphy and Illustration
To draw and to engage in the art of calligraphy are interest areas for our young Inkspillers as well. Do you share them?
Photography and Cinematography
Handling a camera or Go Pro requires perspective and framing ability--a combination of the imaginative and the technical. What about our Inkspillers who hope to take excellent pictures or make outstanding movies some day?
Specializing in Novels and Short Stories
Plot, Character, Setting, Style, and Theme--the tools of the trade, where novels and short stories are concerned. If this is your area of interest, you could bring others into the wonderful world of fiction as well.
Working on Study Skills
The student members, a.k.a. "Inkspillers," keep a daily Journal to practice their writing and to doodle, sketch, and draft. One of the things they use the Journal for is to take notes on works from the Library List. This means that they have an opportunity to learn annotation, highlighting, and abstracting--all important skill sets in their own right. Could you assist with coaching towards these goals?
Appreciating Pens and Penmanship
In the FPC, we learn how to use and take care of Fountain Pens. We also work on our penmanship, and we are interested in reviving the art of handwritten letters as well. This means we need adult mentors to assist student members with these skills. Is that of interest to you?
Diving into the Great Literature of All Time
Three books (or short stories, or poems, etc.) a year are to be read by the Inkspillers. (As an adult mentor, or "Starcharter," you will be providing literary recommendations of your own.) Are you passionate about encouraging young people to delve into the classics?
Specializing in Nonfiction
Journalism in its various modern forms--reporting, blogging, making documentaries--is a major specialization in and of itself, and requires someone who understands the principles of research and citation as well as ordered presentation of material. Are you the hard-headed Starcharter for this job?
Specializing in Poetry
Each student member of the FPC is meant to select an area of specialization to concentrate on, in discovering and developing his or her own creative abilities. Our budding young poets, for instance, are in need of a guiding hand. Could it be yours?
